The Klamath Piano Project is about more than just placing a piano in a location in downtown Klamath Falls. It gives local artists a chance to show off their art in an extra-creative way. It gives the community and visitors a creative outlet to express themselves in a public space. And it brings joy and surprise to public spaces in the streets of downtown Klamath Falls by providing a space for people to gather, celebrate, and make spontaneous connections with each other.
The idea for the Klamath Piano Project came from a similar initiative in Fort Collins, Colorado. The following video is an introduction to the "Pianos on Main Street" concept.
Where will the Pianos come from?
The pianos will be donated from local community members and partners of KFDA. Two potential pianos have already been identified and we believe there are more out there just waiting to be a part of this project! Pianos will be evaluated to make sure they meet basic criteria, and the committee will work with experts to complete minor repairs, tune them, etc. Then our artists will get their chance to do their thing!
Where will the pianos be located?
The pianos will be located throughout the downtown area initially. Tentative locations for the pianos are: Sugarman’s Corner, the Klamath Commons Park, Veterans Park, the Oregon Bank Building Plaza, Klamath County Courthouse Courtyard, and Klamath Falls Amtrak Station.
When will the pianos be on display?
Pianos will be placed at each location from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. This timing is ideal because the weather is typically best during these months, and this is when we typically see the highest concentration of pedestrians downtown. Depending on weather – pianos will be can be out until mid-October. During the offseason, pianos will be stored safely in a warehouse location. We are also working with vacant storefronts and local businesses who support arts & culture - ideally, the pianos will be on display indoors throughout the offseason.
How will the pianos be designed?
The committee will provide a general theme and some basic criteria. Beyond that, our local artists are free to show off their creativity. Artists will be recruited by the committee and can be a volunteer, student, or other local artist. Click on the "Donate" link below if you are interested in being an artist.
How will the pianos be maintained?
The committee has already secured support from local experts to perform maintenance tasks such as minor repairs, tuning, etc. The committee will establish a modest fund to ensure the pianos are always in a playable condition.
How will the project be funded?
There are some modest costs to get the project off the ground and establish a maintenance fund. Following are some of the cost that must be considered:
What else is needed to make this project a reality?
The committee is in the process of recruiting volunteers and sponsors to cover the following components of the project:
